Descripción

Description

Porto, situated on the Douro River, is the capital of the north and the second largest city in Portugal. It is now a World Heritage Site and has been the centre of the Port wine trade for years.

We fly into Porto where we will be based while we explore Porto and the surrounding areas on foot, which is always the best way to fully appreciate the city and the nearby countryside.

We will have time to explore this intriguing city, with its four bridges, two modern and two nineteenth century, where historic buildings and magnificent churches rub shoulders with picturesque old quarters. On other days we visit Guimarães, Povoa de Varzim, Vila do Conde as well as part of the coast south of Porto and the beautiful beaches along the Atlantic.

Guimarães is a delightful medieval town and the birthplace of Portugal. It was from here that the Reconquista against the Moors and the creation of a united kingdom began and the proud birthplace of Afonso Henriques, the first independent king of Portugal.

The medieval centre is a warren of labyrinthine lanes and picturesque plazas framed by 14th-century edifices, while on an adjacent hill stands a 1000-year-old castle and the massive palace built by the first duke of Bragança in the 15th century. Guimarães’ glory was recognised in 2001, when Unesco declared its old centre a World Heritage Site.

Povoa de Varzim Historically a fishing port and ship-building centre during the Age of Discoveries, Póvoa de Varzim is now a popular ocean resort with 12km of stunning beaches. People have been coming here to bathe in the iodine-rich waters (from the local seaweed) since the late 19th century.

Vila do Conde is a lovely seaside town located at the mouth of the River Ave famous for its traditional boat building and lace making. The traditional old town retains its small fishing port and there are a number of historic buildings to enjoy, including the Convento de Santa Clara, once known for its doces conventuais - delicious sweets that can now be bought in cafes around town.

Walking the coast south of Porto along boardwalks and promenades we’ll visit the traditional fishing village of Afurada, then follow the imaginatively created walkway along the south bank of the river Douro back to the centre.

In Porto we have lovely walks taking in some beautiful parks and gardens, along leafy quiet lanes, showing the quieter part of the city, through some picturesque and ancient neighbourhoods. Visit places of interest along the way such as the Museu Romantico, Casa Tait, the Crystal Palace and also the splendid Parque da Cidade.

Another walk taking in some of Porto´s most iconic monuments and places such as the Cathedral, the Stock Exchange, S. Bento Station, the Praça da Ribeira and the Port Lodges. We see some magnificent views from the top of D. Luis I Bridge and the
viewpoint of the Serra do Pilar.

We also have the chance to taste port in the old Port houses of Vila Nova de Gaia.
