Descripción

Description

The West Algarve has spectacular cliffs and maritime scenery, and its varied geology produced a rich range of landscapes, from volcanic hills to dramatic limestone escarpments. This diversity is complemented by the local flora and fauna that flourishes in its mild sunny winters and long hot summers. All this, combined, makes walking here fascinating.

The programmed walks are designed to offer a good mix of coastal and inland scenery, so that you too can discover the huge welcoming heart of the Algarve.

This tour is based in Portimão known for its old quarter, busy marina and proximity to many beautiful beaches and is also a favourite spot for sailing. Sailors of all levels come to the area for its calm waters and great weather; in fact, many sailing competitions take place here.

Portimão on the banks of the river Arade was traditionally a centre for sardine fishing and processing. Today the city’s old and once bustling fishing docks have been remarkably transformed into a scenic promenade, leading to the quaint and tree-lined plazas of the old town. Bordering this are pleasant pedestrian shopping streets, a series of historic buildings, and a tantalising selection of cafés, bars, and restaurants. Portimão has a low-key and relaxed ambience with a wonderful working atmosphere. Portimão itself is not a seaside town, however the adjoining Praia da Rocha, Portimão’s resort area is one of the most scenic and famous in the Algarve.

The glorious beaches, cliffs and coves were a magnet for the early visitors who began coming in the early sixties, building their charming villas which can still be seen today, though now more modernised it still attracts people from all over Portugal and beyond.

Portimão and Praia da Rocha are ideally placed to enable us to explore this fascinating part of the Algarve.

Itinerary

DAY 1

Arrival in Faro

Fly to Faro and transfer by road to Portimão, taking approximately 1h

DAY 2

Rocha Delicada Walk

This walk in centred on the Alvor estuary. This protected natural haven contains a wide array of habitats. The walk uses quiet paths and lanes to take us through a variety of landscapes from salt marshes, farmland, pastures and orchards. It’s great for birdlife observation, so pack your binoculars.

We can contemplate the ever changing shades of blue and green along the secluded inner lagoon, as well as the beautiful Rocha Delicada (‘Delicate’ or ‘Elegant Rock’), an ochre promontory formed during the Miocene period.

Embedded in its calcareous rock face, it is possible to detect some marine fossils from this remote period, mainly composed of oyster, scallop and clam specimens.

The walk finishes at the attractive village of Mexilhoeira Grande with cafés and restaurants for a welcome cooling drink. If there is time before the train back to Portimão enjoy stroll through the village.

Distance: 8 km
Ascent/descent: minimal

DAY 3

Ferragudo Walk

From Ferragudo´s Light House we follow a stunning coastline westwards to Portimão & Praia da Rocha. We visit en route the charming and very traditional village of Ferragudo before continuing into Portimão itself to finish at the stunning Praia da Rocha.

DAY 4

Figueira Walk

This imaginatively designed walk in the rolling hillsides just inland from Portimão enables us to visit and appreciate an area hidden from normal tourism, giving us an insight into the traditional Algarvian way of life as we walk through ancient farmland, smallholdings and the “dry” orchards so typical of this area, to finish in the attractive village of Mexilhoeira Grande.

Distance: 12 km
Ascent/descent: +/- 60m

DAY 5

Free day

This is an ideal opportunity to relax and enjoy the attractions of the Algarve. You can walk/tour independently, or visit local places of interest. From Lagos there is a wide variety of sightseeing available- check here some activities to prebook. Keen bird-watchers may wish to visit Sagres to the West, or the Ria Formosa, in the East Algarve.

DAY 6

Alvor – Rocha Walk

Today we offer a fantastic coastal walk taking in the superb sandy beaches and dramatic headlands between Alvor and Portimão, including the much photographed beach at Praia da Rocha, one of the best in the Algarve.

The rock strata are particularly varied and very colourful, from white limestone to red sandstone. These different rocks support a wide variety of flora and, in spring, there are impressive displays of wild flowers.

Distance: 9.4 k
Ascent/descent: minimal

DAY 7

Vale de Lama

Starting from the village of Odiáxere we walk through gentle countryside to the salt pans on the Alvor Estuary with its abundant bird life. We then parallel the extensive Lagos beach where, at any time, we can drop down to the sea for a rest and a swim. We crown the day with a visit to Lagos with its beautiful waterfront and old historic centre.
